The koi Fish Legend "The Truth Is"

The koi Fish Legend "The Truth Is"

Truly an amazing fish

Japanese koi fish are the subject of several myths and legends that date back to antiquity.

If you believe the oldest of these tales, when the great Chinese scholar Confucius was born a son in 533 B.C., King Shoko of Ro gave him a magoy, a black carp. Supposedly descended from the magoy presented to Confucius by the king, all koi today take on their vibrant colours.

The tale states the Chinese then raised the koi in their rice patty fields to be utilized for food, especially during the long winter months, and not for pets.

Japanese koi farmers got their start because the Chinese taught them the ropes. Niigata, Japan is the birthplace of koi pond culture, which began during a particularly hard winter.

Farmers realized they needed a new source of protein for their family and started constructing ponds in which to breed koi.

During this period, several farmers began discovering unusual colour mutations on the skin of the freshly bred koi.

So they painstakingly chose the most gorgeously coloured fish and bred them in separate ponds to keep as family pets.

Koi continue to be raised as pets and adored for their amazing colours.

A century later, koi fish come in more than a hundred distinct hues.
